Water Department Class D Laborer Job
Summary:
The successful candidate will apply their knowledge of water systems, facilities, and equipment to operate and perform regular and non-routine tasks of maintenance, repair, and installation within the City Water Department.
Supervisor:
Director of Public Works and Superintendent of Water Department Bargaining Agent:
Construction and General Laborers District Council of Chicago and Vicinity, and Laborers' International Union of North America, Local 681 Residency Requirements:
Within one year from the date of hire, all employees in the bargaining unit shall establish and maintain residency within five miles of the City Hall of the City of Morris.
Rate of Pay:
$31.
08 per hour.
Rate will be increased to $33.
25 once D license is obtained.
Anticipated Hours of Work:
7:
00 a.
m.
to 3:
30 p.
m.
Monday through Friday with availability to work weekends, nights, and holidays for emergency situations as needed.
Essential Job Functions:
Responsible for the safe operation of water facilities.
Follow all safety rules and operational procedures as established by the City.
Responsible for proper sample collection and related laboratory or field tests.
Mathematical aptitude to effectively perform calculations associated with the position.
Mechanical aptitude to service, maintain, and repairs to a wide variety of machinery and equipment.
Comply with all requirements to provide high quality water as established by the City and governmental regulatory and environmental agencies.
Must be available for work after business hours and during emergencies.
Physical capability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather.
Must be reliable, responsible, organized, resourceful, and able to think and act promptly.
Ability to cooperate/collaborate with other operators and laboratory personnel.
Good written and verbal skills.
Strong problem solving and prioritizing skills.
Other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
Technical:
1.
Must be willing to learn to decipher operating manuals, blueprints, schematics and other applicable literature for the operation and maintenance of water system telemetry, pumps, and related control systems.
Prior experience in these areas in preferable.
2.
Must have or be able to obtain within one year, as required, a Water Distribution License Class D or higher and General Standard License.
This position may be required to obtain additional certifications as required to maintain the water system infrastructure.
3.
Must possess and maintain a valid Illinois State B Commercial Driver's license (CDL) to operate regulated vehicles and equipment.
Physical Capabilities:
1.
Physical strength and sufficient ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under dirty and uncomfortable conditions and in all kinds of weather.
Heavy labor is defined, for example, as frequently exerting force sufficient to lift approximately 85 pounds and move or maneuver 100 pounds.
Other:
1.
Flexibility to respond to emergency 24-hour shift requirements for call-ins on off-duty hours.
